Sudden Awakening

Picture

Sudden Awakening
is an epoch of gigantic proportion.  It is at once historical, emotional, heart wrenching and wise.  It's magnitude contains three generations of odyssey, three generations of love and loss balanced against awakenings which expand awareness.  The central odyssey is the story's last generation.  In it, an old man fulfills his life's purpose and reflects on how destiny violently directed his life, against his will.

He is Sentsan, the Third Chinese Patriarch of Zen and his story begins with the full life:  wife of his dreams, grown children and a loyal brother ripped from his heart by the quarantine of his own cancerous leprosy.  To save his loved ones, he descends into hell itself, witnessing unspeakable horror with the loss of faith, decency and hope.  But hope does return in the form of a grizzled leper, who has become a warrior monk and been healed by the Patriarch of the Ch'an lineage.

The second odyssey happens one hundred year earlier, predominantly in India.  We see a young prince, master of the eight Arhat hands, a martial art which will one day begin the legend of the Shaolin.  He is Bodhi, the explorer, who discovers sudden awakening.  With him, we experience his beloved teacher, a little woman with the eyes of a Tiger, who sees through time and the veil separating life from the absolute.  Bodhi brings Zen to China, gambles his life to teach the king the power of Buddha, and chooses extreme depravation to teach a few students, who are insane enough to follow him.

The third odyssey is woven by students of Bodhi . It's primary characters are the nun "Zongchi", who willingly sacrifices her honor to save the teaching and the Second Patriarch of Zen, and "Hui-ko", who proves his determination by severing his own arm.  These two are the fabled branches of the cinnamon bark tree and together they throw off the bonds of convention and provide the spice of awakening to Sentsan, who records the first text of Zen, "Faith Mind".  From this beginning Shaolin, Samurai, and Zen emanates.

Sudden Awakening fans the coals of awareness by sharing the potentiality of destiny and higher purpose.  In it, we see noble lives and noble death, perfect beauty and horrific terror.  But hope and faith are reborn beyond the limits of love and hate.
